1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how MoveToCanada ("MoveToCanada", "we", "us", or "our") uses cookies and similar tracking technologies on movetocanada.com (the "Site"). It should be read together with our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

By continuing to use the Site after reviewing this policy and the cookie consent options presented to you, you consent to our use of cookies in accordance with this policy. Strictly necessary cookies are set without consent because the Site cannot function without them.

2. What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the website to recognize your device on subsequent visits, remember your preferences, keep you logged in, and collect information about how you use the site.

This policy covers cookies and the following similar technologies, which we collectively refer to as "cookies" throughout this document:

  • First-party and third-party cookies — set by the Site directly or by third-party services that the Site loads
  • Local storage and session storage — browser-based storage mechanisms that work like cookies but are accessed by JavaScript rather than sent with every request
  • Pixel tags and web beacons — tiny invisible images embedded in pages or emails that allow tracking of opens and interactions
  • Device fingerprinting techniques — used by some third-party providers (such as fraud prevention services) to identify a device based on its configuration

3. Why We Use Cookies

We use cookies for four purposes:

  • Strictly necessary — to operate the Site, authenticate logged-in users, maintain session state, prevent fraud and abuse, and comply with security obligations. Without these, the Site cannot function.
  • Functional — to remember your preferences (such as theme selection, language, and dismissed notices) so you don't have to set them again on every visit.
  • Analytics — to understand how visitors find and use the Site, so we can improve content and fix problems.
  • Marketing measurement — only where you have given consent, to understand which content and channels lead visitors to engage with our directory.

We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles or to target you with ads on other websites. We do not sell cookie data.

4. Cookies We Use

The following table lists the cookies and similar technologies set on the Site as of the "Last updated" date above. Specific cookie names and durations are set by the underlying providers and may change without notice; we will update this table when we become aware of material changes.

We have configured Google Analytics with IP anonymization where supported and have disabled Google Signals, ad personalization, and data sharing with other Google products and services.

4.4 Marketing measurement — set only with your consent

We do not currently set marketing measurement cookies. If we add them in the future, we will update this table and request your consent before any new marketing cookies are set.

5. Third-Party Cookies and Services

Some cookies above are set by third parties whose services we embed. Each third party is governed by its own privacy and cookie practices:

  • Supabase — privacy.supabase.com
  • Stripe — stripe.com/privacy
  • Google (Analytics, reCAPTCHA) — policies.google.com/privacy
  • Vercel and Cloudflare — vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy and cloudflare.com/privacypolicy

We do not control how third parties use the data they collect through their cookies. We have configured these services with the most privacy-protective options reasonably available.

6. Cookies in Emails

Transactional and marketing emails we send through Resend may contain pixel tags that record whether the email was opened and whether links in it were clicked. We use this information to measure email deliverability and engagement. You can disable image loading in your email client to prevent pixel tags from loading. Marketing emails always include a one-click unsubscribe link, as required by Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

7. Your Choices and How to Manage Cookies

7.1 Cookie consent banner

The first time you visit the Site (and again periodically), we display a cookie consent banner that allows you to:

  • Accept all — consent to all cookies, including analytics
  • Reject non-essential — refuse all cookies that are not strictly necessary
  • Manage preferences — choose category by category (functional, analytics, marketing measurement)

You can change your preferences at any time by clicking the "Cookie preferences" link in the Site footer.

7.2 Browser settings

Most browsers allow you to refuse, accept, or delete cookies through your browser settings. Each browser is different; instructions are typically found under "Privacy" or "Security" settings. Visit aboutcookies.org for general guidance, or:

  • Chrome: support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647
  • Firefox: support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cookies-information-websites-store-on-your-computer
  • Safari: support.apple.com/guide/safari/manage-cookies-sfri11471
  • Edge: support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge

If you block strictly necessary cookies, parts of the Site (including login and the application dashboard) will not work.

7.3 Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track

We honour the Global Privacy Control ("GPC") signal where it is sent by your browser. When we detect a GPC signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of all non-essential cookies on the Site for that browser, regardless of any prior consent choice. We do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" signals, which have been deprecated by major browsers.

7.4 Opt-out tools

  • Google Analytics — install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout to prevent your browsing data from being used by Google Analytics on any site you visit.
  • Network Advertising Initiative — visit optout.networkadvertising.org to opt out of advertising-related cookies from participating networks (we don't use these, but you may have set them through other sites).

8. Legal Basis for Using Cookies

We rely on the following legal bases under PIPEDA, CASL, and other applicable Canadian privacy law:

  • Strictly necessary cookies — implied consent based on your use of the Site for its intended purpose; these cookies are exempt from express consent requirements because they are necessary to provide the service you requested.
  • Functional cookies — implied consent based on your use of features that depend on these cookies (such as setting a theme preference).
  • Analytics cookies — express consent given through the cookie consent banner.
  • Marketing measurement cookies — express consent given through the cookie consent banner (none currently set).

9. International Data Transfers

Several of the third parties listed in section 5 process cookie data outside Canada, primarily in the United States. By accepting cookies that involve these providers, you acknowledge the cross-border transfer of the related data, which may make it subject to laws in those jurisdictions, including lawful access by foreign authorities. See section 9 of our Privacy Policy for further details on cross-border transfers.

10. Children

The Site is intended for users aged 16 and older. We do not knowingly use cookies to collect information from children under 16. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 16 has provided information through cookies on our Site, contact privacy@movetocanada.com and we will delete the relevant data and clear the device's cookies on next visit where technically possible.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. When we make material changes — for example, adding a new category of cookie or adopting a new third-party service — we will update the "Last updated" date and, where the change requires renewed consent, prompt you again through the cookie consent banner. We encourage you to review this Cookie Policy periodically.

12. Contact

If you have questions about our use of cookies or wish to exercise your rights, please contact our Privacy Officer:

We will acknowledge your inquiry promptly and respond within 30 days, in accordance with PIPEDA.
